MRDC joins PNG Law and Justice Sector by Sponsoring the 2011 SYMPOSIUIM on the Status of Alcohol Abuse in PNG

Mineral Resources Development Company Ltd today presented K20,000 to the Law and Justice Sector Secretariat to assist with the hosting of the 2011 Symposium on the "Status of Alcohol Abuse in PNG". The presentation was made to the representatives of the Law and Order Sector Secretariat by MRDC External Affairs Manager Mr Imbi Tagune on behalf of the company.

MRDC understands that alcohol abuse is prevalent in many parts of the country and alcohol is also the main cause of family breakdowns, domestic violence, violent crimes, road accidents and lawlessness in many PNG societies. Alcohol abuse if left unattended has the potential to escalate the law and order problems facing the country and would have a detrimental effect on the prospects of the national economy and social welfare of citizens through the loss of investor confidence, decline in business operations and increase in employment opportunities. Some of the things we do not want to see when huge investments are underway in the country.

Our sponsorship today will contribute to the Law and Justice Sector initiative to understand the impact of alcohol in our societies by bringing together stakeholders to collect their various views.

MRDC also understands that the rate of alcohol abuse is growing at a fast rate and our support to the Secretariat today will go a long way in ensuring that proper and lasting solutions are found collectively by all stakeholders in the country to reduce and eradicate alcohol abuse in all the societies of PNG.

Being a leading company in managing landowners' equity and royalty benefits from the mining and petroleum projects, MRDC wants to send out a strong message to our beneficiaries that we are serious about curbing alcohol abuse especially in the project areas where all forms of violence are mainly linked to alcohol and drug abuse. We continue to advise our beneficiaries that the mines and oil projects have reached their peaks and are on a downward trend and whatever is received as equity and royalty is invested properly so that the benefit streams are sustained after the lives of the projects.

MRDC would also like to see the PNG Law and Justice Sector partner with the project developers in the country to bring out the message on the consequences of alcohol and drug abuse to the project areas. We would also like to commend the major mining and petroleum project developers for their Zero Tolerance on Alcohol and any other forms of drugs at the project sites and we would like to encourage the host communities to maintain this same zero tolerance on alcohol and drug abuse in the village communities.
